Working in the creative industry part D

I enrolled to take part in a day activity at the Tyneside Cinema film studios, which involved taking part in a collaborative group filming task.  We worked as team to produce a short trailer for a sci-fi film.  I developed communication and teamwork skills as my group were assigned job roles and had to work productively as a group.  I personally took the role of prop creator and was responsible for designing the props that would then be used in specific scenes to help enhance the story telling. I valued this day  highly as I got to network and meet three of the Tyneside cinema staff who supported my group through the process.  They helped us understand and follow how to work the equipment and follow correct production procedures.  I was able to introduce myself and find ot a little about their roles.  Also it was fantastic to learn about the cinema, and the types of facilities it offers to aspiring media professionals beyond just showing  films.

Furthermore, I was lucky enough to be able to receive work experience at a local infant school, which allowed me to design and create their news letter which they would send out to families. This valuable experience allowed me to collaborate with the staff as well as the students and we all worked as a team to pull all of the resources together. I personally took on the role of developing the page layouts and deciding what information or images would go on each page which helped enhance my  communication and teamwork skills as the rest of the team would help gain material for the news letter depending on what was appropriate, this allowed us  to work productively as a group. The time I had on my work experience was valued highly as I was able to get a feel to what a job would be like as a Digital Marketer whilst also being able to express the enjoyment designing brings.

In addition, i enrolled to take part in a day activity at the Stadium of Light, which involved taking part in a collaborative group filming task.  We worked as team to produce a short trailer to show off the events that was taking place that day.  I developed communication and teamwork skills, working in a fast pace environment and team leading, as my group were assigned job roles and had to work effectively as a group.  I personally took the role of camera operator and was responsible for filming the footage that would then be edited together in trailer form.  The day was extremely significant as I got to network and meet three of the Staff who supported my group through the process and helped us.  I got to introduce myself and explain how certain equipment works and what scenarios they could be used. This overall helped be gain a understanding and a feel of what being a camera man is like and how to interact with people effectively.

Furthermore, I participated in a month project with Creative Seed. which involved taking part in a collaborative group filming task.  We worked as team to produce a short trailer for the Halloween event that took place. I developed my time efficiency, leadership and teamwork skills as my group were assigned job roles and had to work productively as a group.  I personally took the role of editor and was responsible for gathering all the footage and editing them together correctly and fluently whilst also being in a trailer form.  The project was very valuable as I got to understand what it means to edit as well as having effective communication between your group/team to ensure the final product is the best it can be.

Also, I enrolled to take part in a day activity at the Sunderland University, which involved taking part in a team working environment .  We worked as team to produce a segment of a news broadcast.  I developed communication, timing and teamwork skills as my group were assigned job roles and had to work efficiently and fluently as a group.  I personally took the role of  camera operator and was responsible for changing the camera positions during live tv to ensure the footage that was recorded will keep the audience engaged.  The day was very valuable as I got to network and meet three of the Sunderland University staff who supported my group through the process.  They helped us understand how to work/control the equipment and follow correct production procedures.  It was also amazing to learn about television and the types of facilities it offers to aspiring media professionals.

Furthermore, I was lucky enough to be able to receive work experience at a boxing club, which allowed me to design and create three types of social media for them, which consisted of an Instagram page, Website and a promotional video. This valuable experience allowed me to collaborate with the company as well as some of the students in my class and we worked as a team to pull all of the resources together. I personally took on the role of developing and designing the Instagram page, creating the website and capturing and creating the promotional video. Doing this helped enhance my leadership, teamwork, communication, listening and determination. The people in my team helped me gain certain footage by creating scenarios or simply moving objects and this allowed us  to work productively as a group. The time I had on my work experience was valued highly as I was able to get a feel to what a job would be like as a Digital Marketer whilst also being able to express the enjoyment designing brings

Finally I used a website called blogger which is my digital presence and displays my work progress over the years. Blogger allows me to organise my work by using “tags” to place certain pieces of work in the same place so it is easier to locate. Al of my work over the two years I have been at college has been uploaded onto blogger to allow access at all time no matter where I am and it is also easy to locate pieces of work. Using blogger has taught me how to be organised and create a piece of writing professionally to continuously ensure my blogger looks neat and professional.

I have a second blogger account which contains all of my resources for my showreel. My showreel consists of all of my project and design work I have done which I can show employers to show what I am capable of and the amount of potential I have. The difference between this account and my other blogger account is this one only contains my projects whilst the other blogger account consists of my projects and a mixture of different assignments. The overall purpose of the second account is to display all of my work in a more organised fashion.

Working in the creative media industry

The media industry is a huge platform ranging from: film, television, radio, animation, computer games, publishing, press, advertising and marketing. All of these sectors all produce a product for example film and television both produce a source of entertainment and a virtual escape from reality. This product has been enhanced in computer games, virtual reality and computer games in general give the user an escape from reality and provide entertainment which can last hours at a time. Marketing, advertising, publishing and the press all provide information whether that’s on celebrities or a major companies new product. They all inform the audience by producing a product of either an article, advertising posters, adverts and media campaigns.

Warner bros is a huge film company and they are constantly in competition with Marvel, Dreamworks and 20th Century Fox. To create the blockbuster movies these major companies create you need an effect and efficient crew. These crews consist of: producers, directors, camera operators, sound recordist, picture and sound editors, scriptwriters and set designers. Producers produce the movie and ensure to create the vision the director has, producers do a lot of work and that’s way they get paid more money than the director does because it is their responsibility to ensure everything flows and works perfectly to the directors vision they are the second highest in terms power on a film or television set. The director has the most power because the director controls everyone on set to ensure his or hers vision is captured correctly. Directors begin takes, end them and call all the important decisions on set if there was no director there would be no film or television show. Camera operators are essential because their job is to capture the actors acting in different shot types that the director wants. Being a camera operation leaves you responsible for the quality of the shot types and how good the shots look however, timing is definitely needed to be a camera operator because camera shots can change rapidly or move fast especially in specific scenes In Film or television such as fight scenes. Sound recordists endure audio is clear and to a specific volume to ensure everything is heard clearly and not too loud when a scene is done for example a sound recordist will record a characters line whilst they are in a street and they need to ensure the audio picked up is the characters dialogue rather than background noise. Sound recordist can also be foley artists and their job is to create specific sounds that can not be heard within a scene when it’s being captured for example a horse running is most commonly foley work because it is a difficult sound to pick up when recording a horse galloping. Furthermore, picture and sound editors are significant roles because they ensure everything is perfect when stitching together all the audio and video clips. Their job is to go through all the footage and piece it together and make it run smoothly whilst creating pace and enhancing a scene with either audio or a variety of cuts. Scriptwriters create the script that the film or television show is based on and these scripts need to be perfect so everyone knows what they are doing on the days of filming.  Having the scripts perfect and handed out on time to crew and actors is essential because they contain camera directions and all the actors lines and instructions.  Finally set designers design the sets the scenes in the script take place and this job role is most commonly used in television shows because films in modern times normally use blue and green screens rather than having a set builder unlike television shows where their budget is not that big to have everything cgi. Being a set builder means you need to create the sets correctly to how the director envisions it. All the job roles explained above also apply for computer games especially rockstar which is a popular gaming company who is normally in competition with rocksteady games and many others. However the crew is dealing with virtual actors and characters and everything Created is done online rather than in real life.

Furthermore, advertising and marketing deals with more legal aspects such as managing legal risks, managing permissions and analysing the target audience of the company.  Companies that advertise and use marketing can vary from small business to Kfc or McDonald’s, advertising still uses a crew that a film set would use however similar to films, tv shows and games they need to ensure they use non-copyrighted content to ensure the company they are advertising for or marketing doesn’t get sued for using copyrighted content. If a company did get sued for copyrighted content that has a negative impact on the company but as well as the audience of the company’s. So ensuring that everything used in advertisements and marketing is non copyrighted is essential and a significant job role. Permissions also falls into this category because certain content is allowed to be used within specific reasons and this means someone has to ensure the content with permissions  attaches to it is used correctly and follows the permissions to ensure the reputation of the company is contained. Finally analysing the audience of the company is important to ensure you create content specifically for them to make sure you gain their attention and hopefully increase the company’s audience number as well as sales because of the advertisement made.

The majority of these sectors advertise their job roles by word of mouth, personal contacts, social media and personal websites. Companies such as itv and channel 4 advertise job roles on their personal website under a tab called “vacancies” and they do this because they know if anyone is looking for work within television they will look on company websites first before scrolling social media. Film companies normally hire people via word of mouth or personal contact as they may have worked with before. The reason they are more likely to do this is because they care about your personal experience and how you handle certain situations rather than if you have a masters degree in film but are not able to cope under stressful situations. Hiring someone they have worked with before can be effective because they will be familiar with the style they work in meaning they can work more smoothly together and be more time efficient. The guardian tends to advertise for its job roles via national press because they will be able to reach a huge audience and receive as many applications as they need compared to the BBC where they would advertise their job roles on air or on their own website much like channel 4 or itv. Within the gaming sector advertising for a job role is usual done on job websites because they are looking for people who have the skills required to fulfil  the job role and the level of intelligence needed to complete the job. It is much more based on skill and ability rather than experience however experience is always good in any job. Social media is also a significant way of the gaming sector to promote job offers they have available. More than half of the population is online and actively uses social media which increase any companies audience when advertising products or jobs online because a large amount of people will see it which is what the company will want. When advertising on social media most companies use Instagram,Twitter and Facebook these are all highly populated forms of social media and would guarantee the company a lot of applications. There is also a possibility the users could show their friends the advertisement or send them it which would also increase the target audience for the company. Almost all companies advertise online with their personal accounts because it does not cost any money and reaches a large audience, the only way it costs money is if they are advertisements on videos and not just posted by their profile account.

The different types of employment include part-time, full-time and casual labour. Within radio production, many employees are employed on a full-time contract, especially radio presenters. This is because the audience of the radio broadcasted show will rely on the same presenters for entertainment, security and consistency, and therefore the presenters will need to be permanent employees of the company. Furthermore, the entire "behind-the-scenes" section of employment within a radio company will also be hired as full-time employees on a permanent basis, due to the fact that a radio show is constant, and does not tend to stop, therefore proving that a constant supply of staff is required to keep the radio company active, and so employees with a full-time contract are easier to maintain for the company in comparison to hiring new people often or having more staff but on a part-time contract. However, not all employees within radio companies are on full-time contracts. Radio presenters will often have guests within their show, that will appear once or twice, showing that the radio producers will have hired these "special guests" on a casual labourer's contract, or as a temporary employee. Also, within the games development sector of work, these employees are on a variety of different contracts, depending on the type of work that they do. For example, a games developer may be hired on a full-time contract within a gaming company such as Rockstar, so that the company can produce constant games, to keep their income consistently high. However, a game tester may only be hired on a part-time contract, as games are not created every single day, and so a game tester would only spend a certain few days each week actually doing their job, therefore showing that it would be easier for this type of employee to be on a part-time contract. On top of that, game companies often tend to hire white hat hackers or ethical hackers on a casual labourer's contract, once a game is created and ready to be published, so that they can "hack" the game and exploit any weaknesses within the game, so that the company can re-evaluate the security of the game that they created, before publishing said game. On the other hand, some games are developed, tested and produced personally (where the creator does not work for a specific gaming company), which means that this person will be self-employed, and will only be paid for the work that they produce, rather than a set wage (like what is given to those on a full-time contract).Similarly, the television and film industry tend to hire a multitude of different working sectors. For example the filming crew will be hired on a full-time contract (or at least until filming for the film is complete), as film production is stressful work, and so it is easier to keep the staff the same throughout the entire production of the film. However, some employees may be hired for the day or for a few days, meaning that they will be on a casual labourer's contract, depending on the role they play within the production of the film, for example if they play a small part in the background of the actual film. Also, the film industry can contain part-time jobs such as a driver. This role contains the responsibility of transporting essential materials (such as actors and gear) from one location to another, which does not have to be done every single day, and so meaning that they would be on a part-time contract.Overall, many companies are more likely to hire employees on a full-time contract, as it is easier to manage (with a consistent pay and consistent hours, providing a consistent amount of work), rather than a part-time contract or a casual labourer's contract, however as full-time workers will work for more money, this means that companies will tend to hire less employees who will earn more money, due to the company's need to pay tax based upon their profits, therefore saving the company money if less people are hired on higher-paying contracts (such as full-time) and more people are hired on lesser paying contracts (such as part-time), meaning that the company will pay the same amount in tax, but pay out less in wage. Bigger companies such as radio production and the film industry will earn a higher income (stereotypically), and will therefore hire the minimal amount of staff on high paying contracts, and everyone else needed on lower paying contracts, so that the income therefore remains high even after the income tax paid and the wages paid.On top of that, within companies, people may be hired as full-time promoters. This involves running social media pages, or advertisements of the company, to boost the popularity and to improve their reputation, therefore bringing in more customers to the to company, and gaining a higher income. For example a magazine company may hire someone (typically a younger person) to set up a social media page based upon the magazine that they produce, giving insights to the younger generation (who are more commonly found on social media) of what their magazine involves, which is a full-time job as this social media page would need to be consistently updated to actively gain a following or to keep the entertainment. Also, some companies such as the film industry will hire a temporary, one-time employee to create a poster or a billboard design to promote their movie, therefore showing that self-promotion can involve both full-time and one-time occupations.

Showreels are used to show off and express a persons capability by having content and products a person has created on a website or on social media to show an employer. These are often used to highlight the skills you have and can perform whilst showing off your creative side to the employer.

A portfolio usually consists of work you have gathered over a period of time that you believe express you in the best way possible when it comes to working. Employers could look into these to see what you are capable of and what your work ethic is like to help decide on employment.

Having a website allows you to showcase all your projects whilst also having feedback from clients which helps employers see the skills you contain within  communication and how you act upon that information. They also allow you to contain extra information such as cvs and even your portfolio to help back up your skills and abilities even more, employers will most defiantly look into a website to help them see what you are most capable of with a significant amount of evidence.

Furthermore, having a social media account for your work can be extremely beneficial because employers will see you have a fan base that are interested/ enjoy the content you create which will appeal to them because if you have a big fan base you must be creating good, creative content. The content can range from short movies to creative photoshop work as long as people enjoy what you are doing then this can be very beneficial. Having a social media account can also make it easier to manage all of your projects and work into organised places to help locate them easier.

In addition, having references can open doors in many media sectors because references tell the employer our work style , work ethic and the good things about how you work. This can set you aside from the competition because most people can say they are determined and thrive on challenges however don’t have the references or evidence to back it up.

To increase job interview it is important to list your skills on your cv as well as your education and training. Showing your education and training can set you aside from other people applying for the same job and this could be because you are trained in a specific area which is very beneficial to the employer or you have a higher level of education than other candidates so you will be consider for the job role more.

Furthermore, showing you have work experience wether this is in a specific area or voluntary work in a park it shows the employer what you do in your spare time and also how you could have experience in a specific field relevant to them. In addition, updating your cv, showreel and website can help create a significant advantage you could have over other candidates as it shows you are frequently expanding your knowledge and developing your skills which is what an employer will be looking for.

Overall what really stands out during an interview is your professionalism, time management and your reliability and these can all be demonstrated on your cv, references and even during an interview. Employers want to ensure who they hire is reliable and can be trusted because this means they will also be dedicated and determined when provided work to complete and won’t miss deadlines this also links into time management.  To help advance and excel within the media industry showing you are capable of managing your own projects around work and other activities which demonstrates you are very time efficient and will help you work higher up the employment ladder. Also adapting to modern society and learning new software could help you significantly in excelling in the media industry as new job offers could arise because you understand the new technology/ software. Finally contributing to team projects and working along with colleagues shows how you are capable of working with others, determined to reach the end goal and will take control if necessary to ensure success. Doing this will help you succeed because it shows how you are taking on responsibilities and executing the required work whilst working with others overall showing your determination for success.

Structure of the media sector

Majority of the media sector is structured very similar if not identical however the structure entirely depends upon the sectors end goal and the end product the sector focuses on. The film and tv sector is very similar whilst gaming has a few changes to set themselves aside. Furthermore, publishing and press are very similar in the structure they use although opposed to radio sectors.

Public service media

Public service media is a service which reports to the public via the media for example radio or news broadcasts on television. However to have a successful and efficient public service team you will need:editors, journalists, writers, sound mixers and many more which can also be used on a television set such as the BBC news that takes place on a night.

Commercial Media

Commercial mediais the use of advertisements in the media to generate a  profit. Companies such as KFC or even Argos all advertise products online to gain the audiences attention and hope they are persuaded to buy their product which will allow the company to gain a profit. To have a team that advertises you would most likely need an editor, writer, camera operators and possibly animation specialists.

Independent media

Independentmedia is any form of media that isn’t  controlled by the government or any political party that has certain beliefs that reflect in their articles. The sun newspaper distributes its newspapers bother online and in print.

Vertical and Horizontal Integration

Horizontal integration consist of only being invested in the same sector throughout its existence. However Vertical integration consists of big corporations such as Disney which branch out into different media sectors.

Cross media

Cross media is the distribution of different products throughout media sectors. eBay is a perfect example of this as it sells games, toys, electronics, furniture and even books.

Multi-platform media

Multi-platform media consists of the distributing content over a variety of media outlets for example Microsoft. Microsoft create gaming consoles such as the “x box” and other generations of it as well as tablets, gaming pcs, games and software such as PowerPoint etc. The employees needed this for this would include: plenty of marketing and technology specialists.

Multinational media

Multinational mediais the use of distributing media across the whole world for example square Enix are based across the world to deliver significant news on their latest games. Which will require a huge marketing team to allow for all of this to happen.

The nature of many gaming companies is to provide consumers with the latest video game with high resolution and industry changing graphics. For example Rockstar games specialises in open world games such as gta and they continue to change the industry especially with Gta 5. They have made many GTA games and all have been successful which shows how each one pushes the boundaries and challenges their competition. The size of the organisation has increased massively through the years as their teams and projects increase because of their ideas getting bigger. This means they’d need a bigger team to help manage and maintain everything to ensure it runs smoothly and ease the production, Rockstar hires employees from all over the world and has many teams working in different countries.
Furthermore, ownership within the industry is whom owns the rights and maintains most of the power and in Rockstars case it would be Take Two interactions which is another video game team. In addition, one of the most significant rules in a company like Rockstar is confidentiality because games such as GTA 5 have an online mode and the release frequent updates to keep the audience entertained and they don’t want the public to see what they have planned next because it would ruin the surprise and the hype the company usually gains. Although this can also happen to another game they could be talking about developing but not follow through with it which could disappoint the public/ their audience. Rockstar have many investors which will fund them on products they wish to create or even advertise however, they also use money that the company holds themselves for creating products to hopefully make a profit and make more money. Although the money is also spent on staff and licences to ensure they do not gain any copyright claims which could lose then a lot of money. Legal and Ethical issues within the media is important because once it’s online it’s their for ever so every company must ensure they are completely respectful to all customers if any background whilst using appropriate language. Furthermore, companies such as Rockstar need to ensure they gain rights for all things they use because within their GTA 5 game they use well known music by the community and if they did not gain the right to have that music in the game then they would have a copy right claim and be in court which will result in a huge loss of money and the company would gain a bad reputation.

Exam mock

In the past the LGBT community  was under represented in the tv sector. However, over the years there has been a significant increase in representations from 2015 to 2019.

Looking at the past the stimulus material it states that fasteners was "criticised in parliament for the first on screen gay kiss". This shows the issues revolving around the LGBT community and how their was still many debates around it and it was barely spoke about to a point where it reached parliament debate. I done some further research into this and discovered that there was a significant lack of LGBT representations in the UK up until 2009, this is when the first episode of the hit tv show "Glee" was released. The first episode had 1 million viewers and the numbers kept increasing, the episode consisted of many characters especially a gay white man.  This shows the LGBT stereotype the show is  focusing on making it a sole representation on tv at that time.

In today's world the presence of LGBT in tv has made an significant increase with the effect to challenge those "outdated stereotypes" and the debates attacked to the community .According to a research study taken by Glaad it found that 4.8% of the characters expected to appear on Prime time scripted broadcast tv would be LGBT.

My primary  research supports this as I carried out research analysing the CWs hit tv shows and discovered that they revealed one of the most popular villains was gay and only recently they revealed one of their lead female superhero was transgender and was being played by a transgender as well. However the shows focus was not on their sexuality it was based upon the crimes they committed and the bad things they done as well as the good things they done and the things they have to deal with being gay and transgender. These representations are significant as it does not represent the community to be idealistiv, however is ensuring the characters are given as much depth as a heterosexual character.

The secondary source used to answer the question is reliable as it has a excellent reputation for providing accurate facts and information as well specialising in matters concerning the LGBT community and issues annual reports ensuring the data is up to date.

When conducting my research I used a range of different sources, one being the Glaad report titled "where we are now" . I chose to use this source because Glaad specialises in LGBT issues by releasing reports annually meaning that the information provided in the reports is up to date and accurate.furthermore, in Glaads report they also go into detail about the change of the LGBT representations across many forms of media and the specific representations often used in tv. Although this report is only using data based on USA tv so it is not a true accurate representations of the LGBT community as a whole.

In addition, another source I discovered was on a website called Wikipedia because it is a website that has been around a long time however, I was soon to realise anyone can create an account and edit the information provided which made me understand that the information was not reliable at all.

Therefore, I found another source which was a newspaper article
From the sun. I believe this source is reliable because the newspaper company and the journalist has a excellent reputation for delivering accurate and influential information. The article talks about LGBT characters in tv shows and their familiarity with the stereotypes of the LGBT community. However, the information provided in the article could be bias as the journalist may influence readers by incorporating their personal opinions into their article .

One conclusion I developed from the research I conducted was that over the past few years there has been a significant increase in LGBT characters within tv. The stimulus material provided supports my conclusion as it shows from 1987 until 2017 tv shows that includes LGBT characters has increased. Furthermore my own secondary research supports this as I discovered many tv shows producing characters from the LGBT community, for example in glee there is 4 gay characters who have important roles and some have been in every episode glee also has 2 main lesbian characters and as it increases in episodes they introduced a transgender main character that deals with community not accepting them. My primary research also supports this conclusion as 98% of people have recognised this significant increase in LGBT characters in tv shows from 1990 to 2019.

Another conclusion I have created once I finished my research was that online streaming platforms have more variety of representations of the LGBT community than tv. My primary research also supports this conclusion as 67% of the people emotion my survey state that they are more of a variety of representations of the LGBT community online on streaming services such as twitch, YouTube and 123movies which allows the streaming of tv shows compared to tv. The stimulus material also provided supports my conclusion as it states that Orange is the new black features more in depth portrayal of gay female characters.

To decide a way to understand how representations of the LGBT community could improve I asked the question " what do you think the media could do to cut down on using stereotypes  of the LGBT community? " the most common answer was " get companies to employ a member of the LGBT community when developing games or character s also have more main roles LGBT characters" this suggests that more lead roles need to be given to the LGBT community when it comes to games or tv to help show how different they all are.

within the previous statement it says "get companies to employ a member of the LGBT community". This suggests that they believe characters from the LGBT courses being portrayed poorly and not accurate which could be because the writers of the characters do not fully understand the character they are writing as they will probably not be a part of that community.

The main point I believe all the research and sources convey is that members from the LGBT community need to be added into games and tv naturally and realistically for the audience to fully understand them. Within an interview I conducted the interviewee stated " I believe all gay characters in tv shows are portrayed the same with the same problems and this is not accurate". This quotation shows how things need to change with how the LGBT community is represented to gain a wider audiences approval.

Personally I believe the government equality office should conduct research into the representations of the LGBT community in UK media/ tv to gain responses and information from the audiences, to show how diversity is being implemented into tv shows. The reports that would be issued could contain more information on how many transgender characters are on tv shows and the number over time.

There needs to be more primary research taken to help identify and understand how the LGBT community s feel about the representations that they see if themselves in the media. A focus group should take place with members of the LGBT community and producers of tv shows to help identify and solve the issues of stereotypes and allowing the community to give advice on what is is really like. Hopefully this would have A positive outcome on tv allowing shows to have a more accurate representation of members of the LGBT community whilst also making the community happy.

Demographics would need to be taken into consideration when researching because in my primary research people aged 16-18 years old answered it however it would have been beneficial for me to expand the age range of whom participates in the survey in order to produce more of a accurate form of results based upon individuals opinions on representations and how they may differ due to age.

Radio production- pre production

Radio production- Pre production

Firstly, I began editing the script because my radio drama did not contain any musical numbers so I had to go through the script and convert the musical numbers into dialogue that could be spoken by the voice actors. I then continued to look through the script and identified where I wanted sound effect and the type of sound effect it was going to be, during this process I decided on which sounds I would create by using foley to ensure they sounded as realistic as possible. Foot steps walking towards and away is what I decided to create using foley so I grabbed a microphone and a walking actor and headed to a quiet corridor to where I recorded the actor walking away and towards me. I knew this foley sound was appropriate for the specific scene I had in mind because if just seemed right to have people walking to and from, and this helped create perspective for the audience and allowing them to be able to engage more into the radio drama. In addition, I then searched the internet looking for all my other sound effects which I was going to use to help bring my radio drama to life, I used a mp3 converter online once I found the right sound effect I was happy with. After gathering my foley sounds I put them into Logic Pro and ensured there was no unnecessary Audio in my clip and if there was I removed it to ensure I only had the footsteps as my sound effect. Overall pre production taught me to be mindful of what technical issue can go wrong and how to fix them for example saving multiple versions of a recording to ensure I have a backup if one gets lost or corrupt. It also allowed me to get a grasp on how to organise people effectively and how to record time efficiently to ensure no ones time is wasted but everything is complete to a high standard.

To begin recording me and my crew went into a recording studio and began turning on the Mac, speakers and plugging the xlr’s into the software whilst it’s also connected to the microphone ( a Rode NT1000) to ensure the sound recorded is captured and monitored. The reason we used this microphone is because it’s a large diaphragm condenser microphone which is perfect for recording voiced although as it’s a condenser it’s requires Phantom power +48v. Once we were all signed in and had the microphone set up with Logic Pro we done a test take, where we got the voice actors to repeat some lines to ensure everything was plugged in properly and working to the standard we would like( this includes the volume they spoke at which we changed by adjusting the gain). During recording we encountered some issues with the voice actors changing volume and moving closer and away from the microphone which meant the volume of the audio was difficult to Change because of the amount of times it increased and decreased.however this is understandable because their is a lot of pressure performing voice acting and this meant we had many takes of certain scenes which was expected and overall gave us more material to work with. Once we were finished we ensured to save it in multiple places as well as on a usb so we were able to transfer what we recorded to our editing room where we worked on a different Mac in a more appropriate environment for editing. Previously we had trouble transferring files and lost a few so we ensured we kept many back ups incase this occurred again.

When it came to editing the audio clips we gained from recording our voice actors we decided to firstly trim down all the clips to ensure they ran smoothly together and there was no huge pauses in conversations between characters. This was done by using the scissors tool and cutting the audio files at the correct time and then dragging them into place where they will line up with the mouse.   During this process I had to keep in mind that some of the audio might sounds sudden or long so I had to keep listening to entire conversations to make sure there was no sudden and snappy lines. Once we done this we jumped in even deeper and began removing background noises to ensure we had the cleanest audio possible and we done this by using effects at our disposal to accomplish this. Furthermore, we then continued to adjust the audio gain to ensure all the audio was basically the same volume where necessary to ensure our final product flowed nicely. Furthermore, whilst doing this I made sure to create perspective by adjusting certain levels of dialogue down and up to really show the audience if someone is shouting or if someone is scared and they have suddenly gone quite. Creating a perspective for the audience really allows them to visualise and escape reality whilst entering the visual escape in their mind which is the radio drama. In addition, we then decided to add in the sound effects we gathered earlier and we adjusted the audio gain to ensure the sound effects did not over power the actors speaking (if an effect was used during a conversation). Also we decided to speed up and slow down background audio to create a pace within the conversation to engage the audience more and this again was done just by adjusting the gain of the files and extending them or shortening them. Whilst editing the audio clips we discovered a few mistakes in the voice actors speak so we ensured we listened to the audio tracks to identify the flaws/mistakes and made sure we corrected them by either finding the correct take of the specific dialogue within the audio files or just cutting the mistake out and ensuring the audio still continued smoothly and fluently. This technique came in very helpful when editing and defiantly helped make the final project better. Finally certain audio clips needed a dramatic effect adding so to create that I decided to fade out the dialogue as it came to the end of their conversation to create an atmosphere of drama whilst also keeping the audience engaged and wondering why it faded out and keep them interested in the radio drama.

Another attempt at editing techniques

This video is the test footage I used to practise the card effect which was shown in my second short movie Four Of  Kind. The reason I wanted to test the effect out was to ensure it would work and run smoothly before I decided to use it in my short movie. All the effect is doing is taking two shots one of someone throwing something and the other person reacting to catching said object and then all you do is precisely cut the video files so they flow and therefore making a seamless cut. The seamless cut adds a dramatic effect to what's happening on the screen by making the audience believe that someone in the same shot has actually caught an object thrown towards them which engaged the audience to the unique effect used.

Four of a kind

four of a kind is another project i decided to take on to help support my camera and editing techniques. I personally believe four of a kind with holds a lot of unique and varied camera techniques such as selective focus and smoothly edited camera techniques to help create an illusion. For example at the end of the short film a character throws a playing card and it lands in another characters head and this was all done within two shots but because of the seamless editing you cannot tell. Four of a kind varies from wide shots to POV shots and tracking shots, i used these to enhance the story telling by using the camera and the specific ways it captures each of the characters. Certain clips i had to adjust he audio by right clicking and selecting audio gain and either reducing it or increasing it. I also dragged the noise reduction effect to allow any ambient noises to be removed and on this effect i sleeved the high noise reduction to ensure all unwanted noises were removed.

Another effect i done was i increased the speed of specific clips to help make the scene look more realistic and effective whist also enhancing the story by making it more dramatic and suspenseful.

Coin Toss

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=loHxxenB_ig

Coin Toss is another example of how i have experimented with different camera techniques to enhance a story and making it interesting. The different shots that were use make the scene flow more fluently rather than being one long shot which would be boring and dull for the audience therefore, using a variety of  multiple shots make the scene more engaging to the audience. I also decreased the time in one of the clips to create more of a dramatic effect to the situation and hopefully enhance the story. Furthermore i added a sound effect of a heart beat and timed it perfectly within the video to ensure it sounded as realistic as possible whilst being an effective way of engaging the audience into something exciting thats happening in the scene by creating a dramatic atmosphere.

Cereal killer:Spoiled Milk Trailer

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cNCduN6lZMY

The reason i created a movie trailer was to demonstrate non-continuity editing. The trailer shows how my movie can be played is several ways and still seem intriguing and exciting. The editing of the trailer shows how i can cut and stick clips together effectively as well as timing the soundtrack in time with certain clips to add a comedic effect, this took some time to do however the overall product is excellent. I used the voice of one of the main characters to voice over the trailer to add more of a dramatic effect and to also hype the movie up even more just incase the video clips are not effective enough. I also use a fade at the beggining to vary my editing effects whilst creating an effective transition and at the end of the trailer i fade the text out to create tension and mystery whilst also making it look spooky by the effect i used.

-use my own videos to show how i experimented with effects to decide whether they are suitable for my movie and why( linking with my movie"
- Four of a kind-specify how this was a trial run of a movie idea you had however scraped it because it wasn't how you envisioned it but it allowed you to experiment with camera angles and editing techniques.

Post Production- Editing

Whilst i was editing my movie together i decided to add a green screen effect so i had to download the clip and drag it into my timeline. I then went into the effects panel and selected the effect called "ultra key" and dragged it onto my green screen clip. This then removed all the green within the clip so i just trimmed down the clip to the length i wanted it and made it fit perfectly into the scene i wanted it. The only problem i encountered whilst editing this effect into my movie was ensuring it lined up perfectly with the beat and the movement within the scene to increase the tense atmosphere that the scene was omitting.

Post Production- Editing

Firstly i began editing by collecting all my clips onto my timeline and using the razor tool to cut down my footage to ensure all the clips flow together correctly and smoothly. I then began adding my title sequence in by creating a new title and typing the name of my movie in the box that was provided( i used a website called da.font to find the perfect font style for my title). I then moved and scaled the position of my title to where i wanted it by going into the effects panel on the title and enabling scale and position. Furthermore i continued to create other effects such as a few titles to help introduce the movie. I added a cross dissolve onto one of the titles to help make the transition more effective and smooth rather than the title just disappearing.

The importance of sound editing

There are plenty of reasons to why there is a need to edit sound recordings and I will go through a few within this assignment along with the specific areas editing audio is crucial and some examples. Firstly, you can edit audio to compress and summaries a sound recording to fit a specific space and this is done to ensure that any audio that is needed can fit the requirements you need it to or that someone else needs it to if you are working for someone. In addition, you also want to eliminate any flaws, repetitive, superfluous, uninteresting, irrelevant material from a recorded clip. A main reason to edit audio that you have recorded is to allow yourself to create impact by adding sound effects and/ or music between pieces of recorded speech.

ADR automated dialogue replacement is an essential part of sound editing when editing a movie because it is used to re-record actors lines and add them into the scene during post production and the reason this is done is to increase the effectiveness of the characters emotions, For example in A league of their own (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6M8szlSa-8o)this scene has ADR in it because the female actors crying was quiet in actual production so they’re done the scene in a studio however they needed Tom Hanks there as well because they were overlapping each other. This was extremely effective and is done by placing the new audio over the characters speaking in the scene and matching it up.  This technique is extremely effective and allows the atmosphere in the scene and in the movie to be enhanced by sound and this will allow the audience to enjoy the movie more because of how much the sound makes them feel in scenes. Another example of how sound is used to enhance a movies story telling is Spiderman.( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jN-FpMyBLLk)This clip shows several examples of scenes I Spiderman with and without sound and I personally think this shows very well how significant the use of sound is during film production because of how it can enhance a story just by using audio and different sounds to help bring scenes and even characters to life.

Fictional content can be edited by speeding up the speed of the audio that is played or slowing it down. Doing this creates an intense atmosphere to the product that is being used for example in movies the audio is usually sped up to create a sense of suspense and engage the audience more into the story, although this can also be done by spacing the audio out and this can create mystery. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8TWPToeLdj4in this clip it shows how the non-diegetic soundtrack builds up as the confrontation becomes more intense and the soundtrack helps build the tension by slowly making the music more dramatic and suspenseful. A common reason people edit fictional audio is because they need to remove unwanted noise from the clips to ensure the audio is clean and understandable, this allows them to apply the necessary level of creative storytelling to facilitate the narrative. Fading is also used whilst editing fictional content because it enhances the dramatic effect on the audience who is listening to the audio whilst producing dramatic sounds that is accepted by the director as it shows them that the suspense is increasing. Overdubbing is also used to add in more clear audio for the actor in the scene and this is used in specific scenes and the reason it is done is so it sounds more clean and clear for the audience which means they will not disengage from the audio. Sound bridging is a unique effect which is used to create a smooth and clean transition between scenes and this is done to enhance the story telling but also have something unique about that product because sound bridging is not that common. Retaining ambient background to recordings is done to ensure there is not a faint noise whilst the audio is playing and it becomes distracting. Editing in spot effects to match the directors needs but also engaging the audience into the product in which the audio is attached to. Adjusting the gain of the audio allows for the audio to be louder of quieter than other audio tracks that is playing and this could be used to make a certain audio clip to stand out from others or to be suppressed. For example, if you were doing a radio drama and the main character was hiding then you would turn the audio gain down to make them seem really quite. During film making a producer may stich together sound bites from various parts of a speech or conversation to make them sound as if they all happened in sequence. This can be risky because audio lacks the ellipses used in writing, listeners may believe the sentences were spoken in exactly that order. Some producers believe the technique is ok, so long as it doesn’t distort the speaker’s meaning. Others consider it deceptive editing.

When editing using shortcuts can increase productivity time as well as decrease any unnecessary time for example when I was working on my radio drama when I was editing together the audio clips I used command c to copy a clip and command v to paste it instead of right clicking and selecting copy and paste. Overall this increased my productivity and the pace I was working at. Other commands such as command and shift are helpful when using logic pro because it allows you to cut an audio clip without wasting time selecting but it in the menus, using shortcuts is extremely helpful if you have a deadline or want to increase your flow of work. However shortcuts vary on different platforms for example only on Logic Pro is command shift helpful but on other audio editing software that shortcut rarely exists most editing software vary in the shortcuts they contain however command v and command c are in all audio editing softwares. The reason knowing all shortcuts will increase ur work flow on all editing platforms rather than just one and this would be an excellent skill to have.

Working can be difficult sometimes because you may only be familiar with one editing software When the Company you are working for uses a software you have never used. This also Apply’s to what computer the company uses because a company could use a Mac or a Pc which are both industry standard but you might  only be familiar with One which means you’d have to learn new programs for editing if you used logic pro because that only works on Mac but audition works on Mac and Pc. furthermore, controls for shortcuts are different on Pc to Mac which will decrease your productivity time and work pace as you learn a new software or commands.

Although, If you are freelance you work with what you are comfortable with and most will use a Pc because you can buy a high spec Pc for the same price or lower than a basic Mac. Being freelance allows you to Be comfortable with using one type of software and commands and not having the worry of having no work because you are only familiar with one software. This will definitely increase productivity and work pace by because using software you are familiar with allows you to flow through the work not worrying about how to do something.

Factual content can be edited in the same way as fictional however it serves a different purpose for example during a wild life documentary you see a lion fighting its dinner and because of safety reasons the crew cannot hold a boom mic over the top of the lion so whilst recording the fight the crew were rustling leaves in a bush trying to mimic the sounds that were occurring in the fight to enhance the action and to show the real experience to the audience. Furthermore, most factual content is likely to be recorded outside which means the microphones need to be set up in the correct position and with the right amount of audio gain to ensure there is little ambient noise coming through to the system and this technique of placing the microphone correctly or adjusting the gain is mainly done on news broadcasts and documentaries which are mainly outside. However, when editing audio for news reports some agree that when a reporter records a report for broadcast, it’s fine to edit out stumbles and errors. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3UewDtB_hk) Although some believe it is involving the practice of many journalists regarding written quotes. The key thing, they believe is for the audio to fairly convey what the speaker said. Furthermore, most news outlets allow standard procedures like equalization and minimizing of telephone line noises to improve the quality and understanding of audio cuts. However, there could be an issue in taking a voice over static-filled line and making it sound crystal-clear: listeners may be confused over whether the person was speaking from a remote location or in your own studio.

There are plenty types of sound editing equipment that ranges from analog to digital. The first piece of equipment Is Adobe Audition CC, this software is best suited for the editors with a big budget for audio.Audition can function both as a single-track audio editor, and as a multi-track mixer for recording and layering sounds. The app can be used as a fully-fledged digital audio workstation with support for recording multiple sources at once as well as external plugins. Adobe also added best-in-class audio restoration tools, allowing you to grab a sample of "noise" in your recording, then remove that unwanted range of sound from the entire file. You can also use adaptive noise reduction (which intelligently detects undesirable sound for you) and automatic or spot healing to remove pops and clicks. However, the best audio editing software to use for multi-track editing and recording for free is Audacity.A basic and slightly clunky interface lets it down compared to some of its rivals. It provides users with a full set of editing and mastering tools, including destructive waveform and multi-track editing. You can't record multiple audio sources at once or perform non-destructive edits.

There are several ways to edit sound and most of them follow the same principal, how to fix it and how to make it better. The reason you want to fix the audio is to remove any unwanted sounds which appear in the recording and this can range from ambient noise to helicopters. Usually there is a tool called “silent” on most editing software or has a similar name which removes unwanted background noise. However, having unwanted noise in the background in just one of many things that can go wrong for example you could have unnecessary dialogue which you want to remove or some audio could be too quiet so you need to increase the volume to make it more clear. Before beginning the recording, you want to ensure you use the right microphone for the audio you are about to capture because the type of mic effects the audio massively.

Once you have fixed the audio then you look to make it better and this can include increasing or decreasing the volume of certain audio clips to enhance what is being told or to make it more clear to the audience. Inputting sound effects or sounds track is an effective way of making scenes better because they help bring the scenes to life and help bring an atmosphere to the audience that you cannot get anywhere else. Increasing the speed and volume of a soundtrack can create tension or excitement amongst the audience and make them really involved and engaged within the piece of material that they are watching and listening too.

When editing sound depending on what the sound is edited for you should use headphones. For example, if you are editing sound for a radio drama then you should edit the sound using headphones because that is the most common form of how the audience consume radio dramas. The benefit of using headphones will allow you to hear the audio clearly so when you are adjusting the audio levels and cutting audio it will make it much clearer for you as you edit it. Knowing keyboard shortcuts when editing would be beneficial because it will allow you to be efficient with your time for example using the command key in logic pro to cut a track saves you time having to keeping moving your mouse and potentially losing the place you wanted to cut the audio. When moving from the recording studio to the editing studio you need to ensure you have multiple copies of the audio you have just gathered and that is it organized in multiple films because this will allow you to be much more organized and time efficient when it comes to editing the sound because you will know where all your films are located and where the backups are. Furthermore, when importing clips, you need to ensure you import the right audio clips because if not then this could mess up your time line and waste your time when you are trying to fix it which is not a good thing therefore linking back in to being organized and labelling your tracks can save you so much time and allow more time in adding effects to the audio such as adding start and end points to help delete unwanted audio.

Production Day Four

Today was our last day of recording and we encountered an issue. The sky and outside in general was darker than the rest of the days recording which worked in our benefit because the scenes were in a different day however it was not that evident that this was the case so i had to add a filter on the camera settings to make the scenes look brighter and more believable. I also had to add a color tone on during the editing process to help bring the scenes more to life and contain continuity. https://youtu.be/jTOd7xAXhio    https://youtu.be/k0bSKKQAaO4

Production Day Three

On the third day of production it was extremely cold which meant the crew and actors were cold as well as the battery. This means that the battery life for the batteries will decrease incredible fast so whilst filming we had to practice out the fight scene we were capturing and making the most use of the battery life when we could. This meant we had to effectively plan how we were going to capture it and where the camera will be placed. If i was to do this again i would most defiantly make sure to record the footage later in the day of a different day.We the decided not to waste this day of capturing footage because of the cold weather so we captured the scenes that took place inside to be more efficient. During the fight scene that was taken outside i adjusted the camera settings by increasing the fps (frames per second) to ensure the fight scene was clear and smooth. https://youtu.be/u2nBK7--qKk https://youtu.be/R15e-AUQ544

Production Day Two

For the second day of recording we picked up  from where we left up the previous day and tried to ensure we recorded during the same time as we did the other day to ensure the sky is roughly the same color to keep the continuity throughout the clips. If i was to redo this would ensure we were more organized when it came to recording the scenes because we rushed it because of the cold weather and the battery dying because of how cold it was outside.

Production Day One extra footage

During the first day of shooting we attempted to capture as much as possible to ensure the continuity within the movie would roughly be the same. In the link provided is a examples of some raw footage captured on the day.  https://youtu.be/vvXlWsqguA0   https://youtu.be/Iwton7JdTfY  https://youtu.be/QeVeWY_ioI8

Production- First Day

For the first day of capturing my short film we aimed just to gain the scenes for the opening sequence so we ensured that they were done correctly and looked to a high standard. The camera was on the default setting however we changed the settings ever so slightly by increasing the frame rate so it allowed the scenes we were capturing to look more crisp. However we had an issue with the public wanting to be where we were recording but we over came this by planning and speeding up our shots so we were no longer being interrupted or interrupting members of the public. Here is an example of the raw unedited footage we captured.
