Evaluation

Story boarding, I found useful because it allowed me to visualize each scene in my head and plan out what kind of shots I wanted: MS, LS, POV, OTS and in which scenes I wanted the camera to be positioned in certain ways. This helped my final product become successful because it showed my creative use of camera movement rather than winging the shots and positioning of the camera on the day of filming which could have created the time needed to shoot footage longer instead of being time productive.

The next thing which I think helped make my final product successful is the meetings that took place. The reason I think the meetings were a huge part in make my product successful is because in the meetings progress on production schedules were discussed also any points that people were unsure about which was significant because it means everyone turned up to the shooting locations on time and everyone knew what they were doing, there was no need to explain what people had to do whilst we were meant to be filming which meant we kept on track with the production schedule.

I decided to bring two cameras on one of the days of filming to capture more footage from different angles to make the scenes more interesting and engaging, this is also an important aspect of making my final product successful because recording footage from two points of view allowed me to have more footage to edit when it came to editing. This allowed me to use the footage captured to its full potential in engaging the audience.

I believe the creative process of making my short film was successful because I discussed my ideas on what to create with some friends and then it was developed into a proposal( which I created on a word document), then leading to a script ( I typed the script up on a word document but I learned what industry standards were needed for a professional script and I used them whist making my own)which helped me visualize where I wanted scenes to be and how I wanted them to be. This then led me onto creating storyboards (I created the storyboards by printing off boxes on a A4 piece of paper which allowed me to fill it in and draw onto the paper) so I could see how the scenes would look before I captured them, allowing me to think about anything that might be hard to capture or identify problems that could occur during filming. Next I started location scouting (which I created a word document and filled it in to help me identify which location I wanted) to ensure I picked the most appropriate locations to capture my movie and I needed to make sure all the locations were suitable and linked together so my final product wasn’t confusing because of the places the characters were. Following this I had to do risk assessments to ensure no one was harmed or injured during filming and if there was any risk I needed to plan/know how to deal with them for example if there was uneven pavement then the cast and crew would need to be careful when working and they would need to wear appropriate footwear. Then I created a shooting schedule to plan when filming would begin and end, doing this allowed me to be time efficient and also plan the days that I wanted to capture my movie. The shooting schedule was significant because it allowed me to plan out how the day was going to go which meant no time was wasted thinking about what to do and when to do it.

The financial aspect of my pre-production was successful because I didn’t have a big budget to work (I created my budget on excel and it allowed me to see how much everything will cost to create my short movie) with however, most of the equipment I used was provided by the college which meant I had to try my best with the equipment I was given to create a high standard short movie. Creating a budget is important because it allows you to see how much the project is going to cost and where the money is going for example you may need to pay for the cast and crews transport. This significantly impacted my final product because if I never used a budget then I would have spent more money on the project than I wanted because I wouldn’t have had a guide to show me what my money should be spent on. If I was to do this again I would try manage my money around better in hopes of leaving some of the budget spare in case of emergencies or if something extra is needed to be bought later during filming that we didn’t think we would need.

During filming we encountered a few problems however one of the main problems was that mini tri-pod that we were going to use was being used the day we were filming so we had to improvise and create our own small tri-pod which was a challenge but our goal was accomplished. If I had to do this again I would make sure I book the equipment in advance so it is ensured, we have the equipment on the day we need it. This played a significant role in creating the final product because it determined the quality of the shots and how they were taken which if this was not done correctly then the shots taken could have been too close, far away or not straight.
