Pre-production log: Personnel List

Here is the personnel list for my short film and it shows the roles of the people who are participating in this production and how to contact them.

Pre-production log: Resources List

Pre-production log: Storyboard

Here is a story board in more detail of a scene i want to create in my short movie. I find storyboarding useful because it allows me to visualize each scene and it lets me see how i want to capture things, which is time effective and it makes filming easier for the crew and cast.

Pre-production log: Storyboard

This is my short story board which will help me visualize the key events which will take place in my short film and allow me to see what i want each scene to look like.

Pre-production log: Proposal

Proposal

My short film will show the devastating effects of bullying that occurs to young teenagers and how some take their own lives because people make them feel unwanted and misplaced in their own town where they grew up.

The plot of my short film is to show how homophobia effects people and how much of a struggle their day to day life is. My short film will adventure into what happens to people who bully others for being gay and how they hurt them which can cause suicidal thoughts or suicide.

Act 1: Act 1 will be 1:30 minutes long and will show the struggles that a homosexual person goes through and the bullying they receive even in their own house. This act will include how they cope with getting ready and how they deal with the pressure of social media telling them how they should act and look.

Act 2: Act 2 will be 1:30 minutes long and will show what happens when homosexuals are physically bullied and how they try to avoid bullies every day.

Act 3: Act 3 will be 1:00-1:30 minutes long and it will show how bullying can be resolved and the damage people do when bullying people by making them feeling misplaced because of their sexual orientation.

Characters:

Bully 1
Bully 2
Josh- Homosexual

The target audience for my short film is teenagers because this short film Is based upon real events that happened to a teenager and the purpose of this film is to spread awareness about discrimination towards homosexuals and is aimed at teenagers because most bullying and discrimination happens between the ages 12-18 which is classified as a teenager.

Pre-Production log: Genre

I decided to research different genres of film and decide which genre to base my short film on. Firstly i narrowed the genre list down to 4 genres with brief descriptions on what the movie would contain if it was to be made with that specific genre. I finally decided which genre i was going to create a short film in and i brain stormed some themes, however i settled with the genre educational and my short film will be based upon the awareness of homophobia.

Requirements of Pre-Production

Unit 4: Pre-Production Portfolio

1.     The requirements of a Moving Image Production

Financing:

Financing is crucial for creating a moving image production because films cost money and financing allows you to manage that money to ensure you don’t run out. Most of the money for a film goes to people’s wages, there are many people involved in creating films such as the cast and crew who manage, record, act in the film and also help behind the scenes to ensure it is entertaining and up to the director’s standers. Facilities also need to be hired so the crew have places to film as well as build sets for the film. Facilities are hired to create sets which allows the film to be shot in different locations on screen although, it’s all filmed in one place and also means the director doesn’t need to get permission to film in a certain location which means they save money that can be spent on equipment needed. Equipment can be purchased or hired and is extremely significant when creating an image production because the equipment is what captures the scenes and what helps amplifies scenes. Cameras are used to record scenes and tri-pods are used to keep the camera in place so the scenes being recorded aren’t shaking because if tri-pods were not used then the scene being recorded would be shaking as someone holding the camera would occasionally move which would make the scene look as though it is moving/shaking. Boom microphones are used to capture sound for the film which is important because if your film doesn’t have sound not many people will go see a soundless film which is why financing is important so you have a budget to spend on equipment which will improve the film. Another important key feature that needs to be considered when financing is props and costumes. Props and costumes are significant for films because they enhance scenes and can add suspense because if you’re creating an action film and you don’t have any prop guns then your film won’t be that successful because there will be nothing that will interest your audience. Also costumes are important because they can reveal a lot about a character and sometimes if the wrong costumes are not correct for the character or genre it can make the film look amateur because the misplaced costumes can make the film look messy and make the character wearing the costume look out of place which is why it is important to finance to ensure you have enough money for costumes and props. Furthermore, clearances may need to be budgeted for soundtracks for your film because if you don’t get permission to use the soundtrack then you can be sued and taken to court for using it. Finally, transport between locations also needs to be financed because moving equipment and crew from locations of filming is important because if there was no transport than the pre-production of the film would be delayed because moving the equipment from location to location is extremely time consuming without transport organized.

Public funding for films is funding that is provided by a publically funded agency such as tax relief, the national lottery or funded via grants provided to support the arts from the department of culture. The pros of using public funding is that it is more likely to pay all projects cost and possibly have more money and more likely to award large grants/contracts. However, the cons of public funding are there can be a disapproval
which hinders the project from going forward and the amount given can affect creativity and diversity of the project. Also sometimes there can be a monitoring program put in place to ensure the money is not misused.

Private funding for films is funding acquired from investors therefore the film production often has to be seen as financially attractive (the liability to make a profit). The pros of private funding are that they are more flexible in responding to unique needs and circumstances and private funding also has less restrictions so more willing to source start-ups or experimental funds. An example of private funding is having investors contribute money to the production in exchange for a percentage ownership interest in the film and the profits derived from the exploitation of the film.

Timescales:

It is important to establish timescales when planning a pre-production because it prevents the pre-production from being delayed because creating a time scale shows the crew and cast how much time they have to complete a certain shot or shoot certain scenes before they are running over time and pre-production becomes delayed because of poor time management. Timescales are used to clearly identify what should be shot/happen during a certain time frame and if extra time is needed then many other pre-production aspects are effected such as the release date of the film and the budget. Another reason timescales are important is because sometimes the cast and crew have other commitments in their schedules therefore planning must carefully consider when all the required components are available, which is why sometimes actors sign onto films and then leave because they are filming another film and the schedules clash.

Facilities:

A key element of pre-production is the facilities/equipment. Equipment is needed and is important to be considered during pre-production because it will save money on the budget because less money will need to be spent buying extra equipment if you have already considered how much equipment you need in pre-production. Equipment is important because certain shots might need high key lighting therefore you’d need to buy lighting and won’t need to waste time trying to buy the lighting equipment on the day you are trying to shoot a certain shot because if time is wasted then it can affect the films budget and cast availability. Equipment can be hired or purchased and sometimes hiring equipment is more effective than buying it because if you hire equipment it means you save money on the films budget which is cost effective however, you only have the equipment for limited time therefore you need to be able to organize when certain shots are going to be taken because you will only have the equipment for limited time. Purchasing equipment is expensive however it means when you need to shoot a certain scene you have the equipment and you don’t need to worry about shooting the scene as fast as you can because your equipment is not on a time limit which could conclude to better filming because the cast and crew are not rushing to try and capture as many scenes as possible because the equipment is on a time limit. Post-production equipment that is needed is editing software and access to foley tracks, this equipment is needed to make the editing process easier and access to foley tracks allows the director to visualize how a certain scene is going to look because of the noise it needs to make. If planning does not take place when hiring equipment, then filming can be extended which can the effect the budget and the cast and crews availability.

Location:

In pre-production it is important to do research on appropriate areas/locations to film scenes because certain locations require permission from the council to film in such as time square in New York  and even if you do get permission to film in a certain location if it is in a busy town or city you will need to close streets off and hire the police to help keep the streets you have blocked off contained which costs money and you will only be given 1-2 hours to close off the streets you need to use before the public can access them again which means scenes can be rushed. Another reason it is important to do research on areas/locations to film is because you need to ensure the location fits your story and genre because there is no point in filming at a location that does not fit in with the story because it could make the audience feel lost because the scene does not suit the genre. Health and safety is crucial to consider when location scouting because you need to pick the safest location to film the scene you need for a film for example if you needed to capture a fight scene on a roof you would look for the safest roof to have a fight scene on and then think about how you could make it safer for example wires/harnesses.

Personnel:

Specialist crews are essential to filming certain scenes because if you are filming an action chase scene in a car you will need a stunt coordinator and a stunt driver because they are trained in what they do and it lowers the risk of there being any casualties on set and also makes the actors safer. Also another example is if you were capturing a fight scene then you would have a fighting specialist come to set on the day of filming to teach the actors the correct way to fight to make it authentic for the film.

Additional Materials:

During pre-production it is important to consider: scripts, storyboards, props, costumes and sound/sound library. Scripts are important because they tell the actors what to do and what to say when and this is used in scenes and the actors have to remember their lines so they can act out scenes. Scripts need to be considered because actors use scripts as a bible it tells them what to say and what to do which helps them act. Storyboards are used to allow the director to visualize each scene and to know how they want to capture it (long shot, pov shot ect.). These are important because it means when it comes to filming the scene the director will already know what he wants to film and how it should look meaning less time is wasting taking multiple takes of the same scene. Props are significant to use because it helps build the character’s appearance and sometimes personality, this also allows the audience to recognize certain genres through props. Costumes also show a character’s personality and should be considered because the characters should wear costumes appropriate to the genre of the film which will ensure the character doesn’t look miss placed within the movie. Finally sound/sound libraries are a mix of sound effects in a folder made by foley that are used in the films and should be considered because it allows the editors to use different sound effects and it allows them to see what sounds better.

Codes of practice and regulations:

It is important to obtain permissions regarding copyright material because if your film contains/uses a soundtrack of a mixture of popular songs and you don’t have permission off the artists to use them then you can be sued and lose a lot of money which is why you need to gain permission to use the songs. Also if your soundtrack used sounds a lot like familiar popular songs you can still be sued however, there are ways to avoid being sued if you change the soundtrack quite a bit. Health and safety procedures are important because within out them actors and crew could be injured and die which is not good for the films popularity and if the film does not have insurance and someone dies then the film can be sued.

2. The Formats for Pre-Production Process

The proposal:

A proposal is essentially a pitch that you would make to investors to share your idea and hopefully persuade them to help fund and create your movie. Also the key element of a proposal is to show that you can create a quick synopsis of the film you want to make and it also shows the investors that you have considered the target audience you would like to reach. Proposals often contain a film synopsis, screenplay structure, characters and a target audience. These are important to consider because when you share your proposal you want the investors to invest into your movie because they believe they will make their money back because the movie will be successful.

Scripting: Master Scene Script:

A master scene script is the format required by the motion picture industry for modern screenplays before they are greenlit for production. An advantage of master scene scripts is that it gives producers a reader-friendly screenplay to show investors and it is also easier to visualize. It also offers a mix of description and dialogue to allow the reader to easily follow the story because the story is the most important thing, also technical information is limited within a master script scene (MSS) format. MSS is split into scene headings, narrative description and dialogue blocks. Some conventions of MSS are fonts are always in size 12 and footers at the bottom right of a page say (continue) only where a scene moves from one page to the next, the next page has (cont.) at the top left of the page.

Scripting: Shooting Script:

Shooting scripts are scripts used during production to shoot a movie, they are formatted to include helpful information that the director may request. A shooting script is different from master scene scripts because it does include camera directions. In broad terms, the main difference between the MSS and the shooting script is that the MSS is a selling tool, whereas the shooting script is a production tool. Scene numbers are added- these remain constant through any revisions (which are printed on colored paper), techniques are included to help the crew shoot on set-these can include camera composition/movement, and editing.

Storyboarding:

Once a script is complete it is then converted into a storyboard. Storyboarding evaluates a screenplay and pictures it separates shots that can be visually translated into individual storyboard panels, this helps film directors and cinematography visualize the scenes and find potential problems before they occur. Storyboards also help estimate the cost of overall production and saves time in shooting.

Shooting Schedules:

A shooting schedule is a breakdown of everything planned to shoot for each day of the shoot-organized into the most logical and efficient order to shoot. The director uses a Shooting schedules because they are essential for a smooth and efficient shoot (which cuts down on time, budget and allows plenty of coverage to be shot). They are important because it is a schedule for the entire shoot, focusing on scenes and days which allows the crew and director to be time effective and not waste time.

Other paperwork:

The types of paperwork that may be used to collect together key information are: location release forms (to formalize permissions to use locations owned by other people), location scouting templates (to collect relevant information about shooting locations), risk assessments (to collect relevant information about potential risks relating to shooting), sound templates (to chart where sound may be used) and copyright clearance (to collect any rights issues that have been actioned).

3.Functions of Pre-production

The functions of pre-production are important because feedback can be given on a script which means there is time to improve/develop the script to make it better and more intriguing for the audience it is aimed at. Furthermore, storyboards help the director visualize what each scene will/should look like and this helps save time and makes shooting easier because the director will know what they want to see so they won’t be trying new takes on scenes because the director will have an idea in their head that they want to capture and put into the movie. Another reason the function of pre-production is important is because location scouting helps discover effective places to film which will help the director achieve his goals. This can decrease time loss because if locations have been scouted and fit the scenery the director is looking for then less time is spent filming at several locations. shooting schedules help make the shooting flow more smoothly because the director will have already envisioned how they want the shot too look which will save time and save money because less time will be needed hiring the equipment needed to shoot scenes. A well planned pre-production can also encourage collaborations for the film. For example, popular films tend to collaborate with famous, well-known artists to sing their soundtrack because it will bring a large target audience to the film.

4.The purpose of pre-production

As well as assisting in the success of a project, a robust pre-production has some specific practical purposes relating to legal and ethical responsibility. One of the reasons that media companies undertake pre-production work is to make sure that what they are planning to produce adheres to the relevant codes of practice, laws and regulations that govern and control their industry. The legal issues media companies need to undertake are to ensure: health and safety procedures and paperwork are in place, permissions are in place for the use of copyrighted material, privately owned locations and permissions in place in the form of contracts for those appearing in work. Public liability is another legal requirement for companies who are involved in media productions, particularly when they are recording in public spaces where the public may be at risk to the production activities. Another legal issue that needs to be addressed is street filming because permissions must be sought and approved for filming in public spaces, and filming licenses must be obtained. An advantage of pre-production allows for there to be less time consumption and less budget wasted because with shooting schedules and storyboards it allows the director to already see what he or she wants in a shot so it means less time and money is wasted shooting a scene multiple times. Also it means feedback can be given on how certain shots should look which means improvement can occur before shooting takes place meaning less time is wasted improving scenes on the day of shooting. The BBFC is the UK’s regulator of film and video, providing age ratings to film material and they are a designated body and as such have legal powers to rate and sometimes cut or even reject work. All their decisions are based on public consultation and our guidelines, which form a contract between the public, the film industry and the BBFC. Film productions will have target audience’s/distribution platforms in mind, therefore careful pre-production decisions may be influenced by target audience’s/certificate requirements.
